In order to be in true partnership with contemporary Europe, we must become more familiar with
the culture of European states. CDFE decided to address this issue by founding the European
Literary Club, a project which identifies relevant literature and works of art for its members
and offers other advantages and privileges, such as purchasing selected items at a reduced price.
The club began its activities on January 1st, 1998.
The choice of literature, music, and films is based on two basic themes: "Europe to the Czech
lands" and "the Czech lands to Europe." We offer translations of the newest European literature,
together with presentations of European music and film, as well as works of Czech authors who
address issues relating to Europe. We import selected European literature in its original and
distribute these at affordable prices.
The European Literary Club has the same name as the book club which was founded in 1935 by
Bohumil and Ladislav Jandovi. By 1949, the Club had over 100,000 members. Our club today is
not a club of the masses, but rather a more exclusive group with members who are able to
actively take advantage of the club's offerings. These include a club newsletter with listings
of the best Europe-oriented literature, film and music; 20 percent price reductions for club
members toward selected works; information about recitals, courses, exhibitions, film viewings,
and other events prepared in collaboration with other organizations; trips to foreign countries;
meetings with will known European writers, book collectors and other artists who are visiting
the Czech Republic; the possibility of participating in events with other international and
Czech clubs, etc.
